Dog grooming refers to both the hygienic care and cleaning of a dog, aside from looking good, dog grooming is important for your dog’s health as well. Grooming isn’t just a dog bath, it also includes nails, ears, teeth and brushing according to the type of coat your dog’s breed has. Dog health and grooming are closely related because when you groom your dog, it is also the perfect opportunity for you to investigate past your dog’s big eyes and fluffy body down to the skin.

Grooming your dog, you are engaged in a hands-on project. During this time you can check on his health by looking out for lumps, warts, and any other irregularities on his body.

Starting from your dog’s feet, look out for any problems on the pads of his paws such as cuts or broken toe nails when you are clipping his toe nails. Lifting his paws and moving him around you can also examine if his legs are sore or perhaps getting arthritis.

Next, check for any unusual smell or discharge while cleaning his ears. Bring him to your veterinarian for an examination if you find something unusual.

Grooming your dog’s body hair also allows you to check on his skin. Shortening his body hair makes it much easier for you to check for any puncture wounds, dry skin, cuts, abrasions, foxtails or other stickers and foreign travellers like fleas, ticks or lice.

Whenever you are grooming your puppy or an adult dog, you are also educating and training them. The more you teach your dog and praise your dog while grooming, the more well rounded he will become.

When we bring a dog home you are accepting the responsibility of caring for your dog, just like you would with a new baby. Investing money on the right dog grooming supplies is essential to keep your dog healthy and looking good.

When we look at our pets we see our furry friends but if we look closer we may see much more that relates to the health of our dogs. Grooming is one way to do just that because dog health and grooming really do go hand in hand.

dog training top secrets we share with you articles, tips and information on how to go about dog grooming in various aspects.

Secrets to teach your dog to stand

Posted by: webmaster | Comments (0)

After you have taught your dog to sit and lay down, the next logical step in your dog’s obedience training is the secrets to teach your dog to stand. The “Stand” command has a variety of benefits. It makes it easier to bathe your dog’s underbelly.

There are two ways to train your dog to stand on command. These methods are:

1. Leading your dog with a treat.

2. Encouraging it to stand by touching its belly.

Place your puppy in a ‘sit’ position. Take the food treat palm facing up and move it forward and away from the pup as you say ‘stand’. Should you find that your dog sits up instead of stands up, encourage standing by gently pushing your dog’s underbelly until they stand before you feed them the treat and offer a lot of praise.

Some people prefer to take the more hands on approach for the “Stand” command. In these cases, the idea is to gently slide your hand under the belly of your dog when they are lying down, and as soon as you see your pet moving, say “Stand.” After they have stood, shower them with praise.

Whichever technique you use, make sure you practice that technique often. Stand is one of those few tricks that may take a few extra tries before your dog has completely mastered it, but once they do it will be a trick they will continue to do for a long while.

Teaching your puppy to lie down

Posted by: webmaster | Comments (0)

Lie Down is one of the most wonderful commands you can teach your dog. It can get him to calm down and relax after playtime. If friends want to pet your dog, they might feel more comfortable when he is lying down. When you want to read or watch TV, your dog can lie next to you.

1) Have your dog sit or stand. To get the puppy to lie down, take a treat and let your dog sniff a treat you are holding, but don’t let him have it.

2) Lower the treat to the floor, and as you are doing that, your dog should follow it down.

3) Be sure to say “lie down” as your dog begins to lower himself.

4) Your dog should lower himself all the way to the floor. You should be now holding the treat between his front paws.

5) Only give him the treat once he is on the floor, so he knows he’s doing it right Repeat the words “Lie Down” many times: Say, “Good boy, lie down. Lie down you good boy.”

6) Practice this several times during the day and over several days.

After your dog has learned the command to ‘lie down’, you can practice it with ‘stay’. It’s okay to let your dog lie down and stay for 15, 20, or even 30 minutes. It’s okay if your dog falls asleep while he’s lying down. Once in a while it’s helpful when he needs to calm down.

The sit and stay command is a really useful dog training technique that is a great tool to have when you are out walking your dog or puppy.

Listed below we have compiled a step by step guide to getting your dog sit and stay.

You should start the training process in a quiet place in the House where there won’t be any interruptions. And aim to keep the training session short but fun so that your dog won’t lose his attention span – about 15 mins for this training command is ideal – so lets get started!

Now we have mastered the ‘Sit’ stage we need to train your dog to ‘Stay’.

1. Now your dog should be in the sit position – a step forward using your right foot. As you do this you should repeat the stay command (using a hand as a stop sign can be a good visual cue), take one step away.

2. Remember to keep eye contact with your dog at all times, and then return to the puppy and reward it with for not moving. Be very careful that the puppy does not stand up or move as you present the reward because then you will have rewarded ‘getting up’

3. Gradually increase the distance by a step at a time and the length of the stay by a few seconds at a time, until the puppy can stay for a minute or more with you standing at least 10 feet away. It is important to set up the puppy to succeed.

4. Now still holding the dog leash vertically above your dog’s head – walk around your dog in a circle. Don’t issue any commands as this will only confuse your dog.

5. After you and your dog have practiced this basic dog training command several times your dog should sit and stay while still attached to the leash.

6. After you feel that your dog has mastered this training technique by remaining exactly where he was when you started you can start dropping the leash by your dog’s side and practicing it without holding the leash.

7. Continue each step exactly the same as you did when you were holding the leash.

8. After you have finished the training session and your dog is sitting in the ‘Stay’ position with the leash by your dog’s side – you can now reward your dog with the treat and lots of praise.

Now you have finished the training session let your dog know that the session has ended by opening your arms wide and repeating ‘OK’ to your dog for a job well done.

Although this is quite basic dog training you never know when you might need it especially if your dog was to suddenly running out the door and jumping on company. that’s when the training really counts!

Have your puppy sit and stay while you place the food on the floor and then quickly give him an ‘OK’ or release command.

Teaching Your Dog to “Sit”

Posted by: webmaster | Comments (0)

Teaching your dog the obedience command “sit” will be an excellent spot to begin your dog’s obedience training. It is a pretty simple command that your dog or puppy will master with ease. You are providing him/her something it will do that may concentrate him/her attention. This will raise the self confidence level of your dog and give him the building block that you can use to build upon more difficult skills and commands.

The most effective ways to train the “sit” ability could be to begin with a food lure… below are 5 easy steps guide on the “Sit” command with the use of food.

1. You should start by facing your dog and move away keeping the dog leash in your left hand and a nice treat in your right hand.

2. You should keep calm so that you don’t get your dog excited – and ask your dog to come to you but using the treat as a lure.

3. When your dog has come to you – you should slowly move his treat over the top of his head. By doing this your dog’s eyes will automatically follow the treat.

4. As your dog continues to watch the treat go over his head his legs will automatically bend as he does this.

5. Your dog will bend his legs and then sit – as soon as you see your dog bend his legs you should repeat the ‘sit’ command.

As we are using positive reinforcement and reward based training give your dog lots of praise and a treat as soon as your dog has positioned himself in the ‘sit’ position. After a period of time when you have both practiced this basic dog training command you can then start to reduce the rewards but continue with the praise.

You should begin with this simple obedience command when you bring your new puppy home, or any time after that. Before you begin training your dog to sit (or any other obedience command) make certain that your dog is assured and comfortable with you – allows you to touch him, pays attention to you and so on, you will need little time to train your dog to sit, and it will turn into 2nd nature finally.

Why dog obedience tips? Because in order to develop a good dog training program it is important to have some knowledge on how to start. A good dog obedience training method should aim to foster a harmonious relationship between you and your pet. It should help you communicate your expectations from your dog and it should teach him how to meet these expectations. It should reward good behaviour and help him in changing habits that are not acceptable. By reading regularly on our numerous dog obedience tips articles, you will acquire the knowledge needed to achieve this.

Yelling and scolding your dog for untrained negative behaviour is not a positive training method. In fact as the human you have to determine what is causing the instinctive reaction and focus on how to change the behaviour in a positive manner.

When starting to train a dog, there are certain things you will want to take in consideration. For example, learning more about your dog and his natural behaviours will help you to help him learn, and give you more patience with him during the process.

Obedience training that is fun and easy will give you the benefit of a more harmonious relationship with your dog. You can give him more independence, knowing that he can be trusted more. You would also worry less about unacceptable dog behaviour.

Once your dog is well trained, it will help you communicate the fact to your dog that you are the leader of the pack and you are there to be obeyed and at the same time to take care of him, as it becomes clearer to him that he is expected to obey and follow rules

Do not set goals that are too high in the beginning, or you will both just get stressed out. Go slowly, take pleasure from small milestones, and give lots of praise. That way, training will be a lot more fun for you both.

A good training will also help your dog know simple rules which will help him avoid confusion which is actually the result of poor communication. Your dog will also enjoy less stress existence with you if he is made to understand your rules. This will make him more confident and more relaxed when dealings with you and other people in his environment.

Raw Dog Food diet

Posted by: webmaster | Comments (2)

A raw dog food diet is referred to an “all natural” or “Primal diet” as ingredients are generally free from chemicals, preservatives, additives, by products and fillers. Raw food diet provides the enzyme rich nutrients and amino acids in a perfect unaltered state – which is easily absorbed by body system and digested. Raw dog food diet also leads to fewer visits to the Vet, strengthened immune systems and less allergy and disease, it also point to the overall health and appearance of the dogs for proof that the raw diet is the right way to go. Raw foodies report increased longevity and reproductive capacity in the dogs. Another benefit of feeding raw is healthy teeth and gums and well developed jaws, neck and shoulder muscles – from all the chewing.

Some people are worried about bacteria in raw food. They believe bacteria will make their dog sick. However, dogs have evolved to eat and thrive on food that may have bacteria present. The dog being a scavenger thrives on the presence of microbes in his or her food. Wild dogs eat the gut contents of their prey, and the feces of many different animals. They also eat soil, contaminated meat, buried bones, and infected meat and so on. These are all a source of microbes and any toxins they might produce. In addition, the dog has certain defenses that enable it to handle bacteria. A shorter digestive track and a more acidic PH in the stomach create a mechanism of defense against harmful bacteria.

Raw meat does of course carry bacteria. However, the presence of bacteria does not mean that disease will result! It would be impossible to guarantee that any meat source, for human or animal consumption, be totally sterile of all bacteria. Even in the most sanitary of manufacturing facilities or the most spotless kitchens there is a possibility that bacterial contamination may be present. Certain conditions have to exist in order for bacteria to multiply to a point where their numbers are capable of causing disease. Plus, those bacteria will have to be very specific strains that are capable of producing disease.

A raw dog food diet typically consists of:-

1) Muscle meat, often still on the bone

2) Bones, either whole or ground

3) Organ meats such as livers and kidneys

4) Raw eggs

5) Vegetables like broccoli, spinach, elery and kelp

6) Apples or other fruits

7) Some dairy, such as yogurt

Raw Eggs – If your pet is not allergic, we recommend incorporating one whole organic egg yolk into your pets’ primal raw foods two days per week for added amino acids. If your pet has a very tolerant stomach, you may include the finely ground eggshell for additional calcium supplementation

Preparation – A raw pet food diet will spoil if left unrefrigerated for an extended period of time. To thaw, remove required patties from the bag, place in a container with lid and defrost in the refrigerator, steel utensil is recommended for the dishes. Any excess food not eaten should be discarded.

Safe Handling Instructions – Raw meat products may contain bacteria that could cause illness if mishandled. Keep raw meat separate from other foods; wash working surfaces, utensils and hands with warm water after each feeding. Treat as you would any raw meat product. Do not re-freeze the food once it has been defrosted.

How Much to Feed – No all dogs are alike in their metabolic rates, age, or activity levels, you can feed more or less of the diet in order to keep your dog at its optimum weight.

Fasting – Another important component in feeding your pet a raw diet is the process of fasting. This age-old practice used to aid digestion and cleanse toxins is common among animals in the wild. We suggest fasting your adult pet one day per week, from breakfast to breakfast. The necessary amount of fasting time will vary from animal to animal. Be sure to provide plenty of fresh, purified water and extra love and attention to your companion throughout the fasting day. Fasting is an optional component of feeding a raw diet and is not crucial to your pet’s overall long-term health

Factors such as level of activity, age, health, metabolism and breed play a part in the necessary feeding quantities of all animals. Please be sure to monitor your pet’s dietary needs and adjust the feeding quantities accordingly.

Some Helpful Dog Feeding Tips – 2

Posted by: webmaster | Comments (1)

Dogs may be fed successfully in a number of ways that meet both the owner’s and the dog’s needs and circumstances. These methods include portion-control feeding, free-choice feeding and timed feeding.

1) The portion-control feeding entails measuring your pet’s food and offering it as a meal, thereby controlling the amount of food that can be consumed. This method is used for weight control programs and for animals that might overeat if fed free-choice. Food can be provided in one or more meals daily, some dogs will overeat when fed free-choice method, which can result in obesity. If your pet eats free-choice and has put on too much weight, you will need to switch to portion-control feeding.

2) Free-choice feeding is also known as “ad lib” feeding or “free feeding.” Food is available at all times, as much as the pet wants, whenever the pet wants. Most nursing mothers are fed by the free-choice method.

3) The timed feeding method involves making a portion of food available for the pet to eat for a specified period of time. For example, the food can be placed in the dog’s bowl for thirty minutes. After that time, if the pet has not consumed the food, it is removed, by doing so we are setting a pattern:-

a) you need to eat when it is offered to you and

b) you cannot have any more until next meal time.

Soon, the dog or puppy will understand the concept of mealtimes and look to you at feeding time. We, as human leaders of dogs, don’t need to be so strict, but letting dogs know where the food comes from does help with leadership symbolism.

4) Leave your dog in peace while it is eating from its bowl. Taking the bowl away while it is eating causes anxiety, this can lead to food aggression. If you want to be sure that your dog is comfortable when you approaching during mealtimes, add a little food to the bowl while it is eating, so it sees you as an asset, rather than a threat.

5) Never feed your dog from the table or your plate, owners should eat FIRST (remember, leaders get to do everything first) before the dogs are fed. This is a good time to work with “no begging”. Dogs are opportunists, and pushy dogs will insist you feed them from the table. “Spot, NO – go lie down!”. feeding table scraps results in begging so it becomes a constant thing, to avoid encourages drooling and attention seeking behaviors such as begging and barking.

6) Each dog should have his or her own dog food dish. Supervise that one of the dogs is not taking the other dogs’ food, this method will allow you to notice if one of them has lost their appetite indicating a health problem.

7) Train your dog not to be possessive of its food. There will be times when you will have to intervene when your dog eats something that may cause him harm or discomfort. You need to be able to step in at such times without any danger of your dog lashing out at you.

8 ) Feed dogs of different ages at different times. Dogs have a very specific hierarchy or “pecking order” which stems from their early years in the wild and they will expect to be fed accordingly. Feeding the puppies separate from the older dogs will preserve this relationship and ensure less conflict.

The above training is BEST done while the dog is still a puppy! Older dogs can be MUCH more protective and have a lot less inhibition about protecting what they feel is theirs. CAUTION ALWAYS is key when working an exercise like this with an older dog.

Some Helpful Dog Feeding Tips

Posted by: webmaster | Comments (0)

When it comes to feeding your dog, there can be a maze-like number of considerations to keep in mind and what will work for one dog may not necessarily work for another, thus it can be hard to put together a feeding guide that will work for all types of dogs, where people have always argued the merits of their particular way of feeding.

Nevertheless, we have managed to put together a collection of general tips that owners of most any type of dog will be able to follow safely, and here they are!

Food can have a serious affect on our pet’s behaviour, as well as their health; many have additives, etohoxy, colorants, preservatives, some of these additives can and do affect our pets dramatically. It is often obvious from its appearance that a food contains say artificial colours. Some almost look as though they were made in Sell afield.

As a responsible dog owner, one of the most common pitfalls you’ll have to watch out for is overfeeding. Attempts to shower our dogs with love by means of big meals and tons of tasty treats are sweet, but misguided. In dogs, as with humans, extra weight can lead to health problems. Be sure to indulge your four-legged friend with affection, not food.

Adult dog or puppy require sufficient nutrients to meet energy needs and to maintain and repair body tissues. The amount you feed your adult dog should be based on his or her size and energy output, activity levels vary dramatically between pets. In their activity levels. An animal with a “normal” activity level should receive what we call “maintenance” energy. A pampered lap dog may require 10 percent below maintenance, while an active pet who exercises regularly outdoors may require maintenance plus 20 to 40 percent.

We recommend all dogs be fed twice daily. Simply divide the amount suggested on the label of your pet’s food into two meals, spaced eight to twelve hours apart. You may need to adjust portions as you learn your dog’s ideal daily “maintenance” amount.
